Peterborough beaten for fifth time

League - Lightning 3, Peterborough 1 - Saturday March 15, 2014
Lightning made it five wins from five against Peterborough Phantoms this season - but they made hard work of it at Coventry Skydome.
It was not until Phantoms netminder Damien King was withdrawn with 40 seconds to go that MK sealed the points with an empty net goal from Leigh Jamieson.
Minutes earlier Phantoms had paid the penalty for King having pushed the net off its moorings under challenge from Jamieson. It was Jamieson who supplied Stan Lascek to score on the powerplay after 55mins 51secs - finally brigning some relief to the home crowd.
The first period had ended goalless with both sides having had seven shots on target, but none of them good enough to beat netminders Jordan Hedley and King.
Lightning were missing both Adam Carr and Grant McPherson and that meant there were no recognisable regular forward lines as the combinations were constantly changed.
The hosts suffered an penalty blow when Tom Carlon was called for slashing after just 39 seconds. But Phantoms offered little with the extra man and in fact it was Lightning who went closest, Janne Jokila almost catching King out.
As the period went on Lightning started to turn up the pressure. There was a good chance when Ross Bowers put the puck across the face of goal but there was no one there to sweep it in.
Hedley pulled off a good stop from Lewis Hook before Michael Farn, adopting the centre man's role, tested King with a great effort.
MK were penalised for an icing infringement but it was them who came closest to scoring while short handed with Jamieson's effort being blocked and Lascek shooting wide.
The breakthrough for the hosts eventually came early in the second period - and the goal was little surprise as Lightning piled on the pressure.
Farn had his shot blocked moments ahead of Lascek shooting straight at King.
At the other end Declan Balmer's effort hit the bar while Hedley did well to save from James Ferrara.
Lascek then broke the deadlock on 26mins 49secs when he redirected a Ross Green blue line blast past King - the defenceman might have even scored himself such was the ferocity of the shot.
Peterborough got back on terms thanks to a mix up in Lightning's defence which allowed Will Weldon and Hook to close in on Hedley - Weldon putting the puck away after 36mins 54secs.
An early third period penalty on Lukas Zatopek was not capitalised on by Phantoms and neither were calls on Lewis Christie and Carlon.
The Cambridgeshire outfit therefore could have no complaints when Nick Poole's men finally wrapped up the points inside the last five minutes.
