Bison take control in cup semi first leg

MKNEWS MKL vBison05032014

Lightning have a mountain to climb if they are to lift the English Premier League Cup for the first time after they were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by Basingstoke Bison in the first leg at Coventry Skydome on Wednesday.
Bison struck after 4mins 2secs when Lightning were caught in a two on one offensive move - Ross Green the only man back - with former MK favourite Michael Wales supplying Andrew Melachrino to put the puck high into the net past goalie Stephen Wall after 4mins 2secs.
The response from the hosts was swift and at 5mins 32secs they were level -  Blaz Emersic the provider for Tom Carlon who came from behind the goal to shoot with netminder Dean Skinns blocking, but not covering the puck and Carlon was able to follow up.
Lightning's penalty kill teams remained resolute when Ross Bowers was sin binned for interference in the 12th minute - denying Bison the chance to go in front.
Michael Farn went close to scoring with a shot which Skinns only just got a leg to before a long pass from Adam Carr reached Leigh Jamieson on the left and his effort was blocked.
Carr came even closer with a blast which Skinns fumbled before it went wide in the 16th minute.
The second session could only be described as a disaster for Lightning who spent much of the time shorthanded - with costly consequences.
In fact Bison had more shots on goal during the middle session than the home team had in the entire game.
Grant McPherson was sin binned for a high stick in the 21st minute and within seconds Joe Greener set up Miroslav Vantroba for a shot from the blue line which Wall could only watch hit the back of the net at 22mins 12secs.
Lightning then had to defend a five on three penalty as both Jokila and Lewis Christie were penalised for hooking and checking to the head respectively. But the closest Bison came to scoring was when Wall saved a Vantroba effort with his legs.
Bison had another powerplay as McPherson and Aaron Connolly were given two minutes each for roughing and Lukas Zatopek was also sent to the sin bin for delaying the game.
This time the Bison pressure paid off with Melachrino making it 3-1 after 32mins 45secs.
The game slipped further away from Lightning after 35mins 9secs when Ciaran Long, assisted by Joe Greener, fired in from the left hand side.
From then on it looked increasingly unlikely that the hosts would break through again.
Heavily outshot 22-3 in the second session Lightning did at least enjoy a marginally better final period.
But even when Bison were reduced to three skaters with penalty calls on Matt Selby and Joe Baird Nick Poole's men were unable to make an impression.
Jamieson's involvement in the game was ended with 11 minutes to go as he was given a 12 minute penalty for checking from behind and Bison's Kurt Reynolds followed suit soon after for an identical offence against Jordan Cownie.
Bowers and Zatopek tested Skinns late on but that was as close as the home team got, Bison taking home a healthy three goal advantage for the second leg next Wednesday.

Lightning's biggest win in three months

Lightning enjoyed their biggest win since December when they outplayed Slough Jets in a 6-1 victory at the Hangar on Saturday.
Co-incidentally the six goal victory just before Christmas was also against Jets at a time when they had seen several player departures. This time their line-up was more settled, although they were missing top import, Mindy Kieras.

Nick Poole rang the changes with Lightning's lines with some unfamiliar combinations.
After a 0-0 first period Lightning tore into the hosts after the break - shrugging aside an early penalty call on Ross Green for interference to score through Leigh Jamieson after 23mins 28secs -assisted  by Janne Jokila and Jordan Cownie.
Blaz Emersic and Tom Carlon had a hand when Ross Bowers got Lightning's second goal on 25mins 59secs.
Less than three minutes later it was 3-0 with Carlon finishing off from Emersic and Ben Russell.
Jets could make nothing of penalties on Lukas Zatopek for hooking and Carlon for slashing.
Green and Andrius Kaminskas then clashed with each sin binned for roughing before Jokila added a fourth goal for the visitors 1mins 4secs from the second break.
Jets finally got on the score sheet after 45mins 45secs when former Milton Keynes player Jamie Line set up Daniel Rose to finally beat goalie Jordan Hedley.
but it was back to business for Lightning less than a minute later with Green assisting Cownie to score on 46mins 38secs.
Kaminskas was involved again - this time with Michael Farn - with both penalised for roughing and cross checking before Farn was the provider for Bowers to score his second of the game on 55mins 7secs.
Not content with his earlier misdemeanours Kaminskas then did battle with Grant McPherson a few seconds later - both receiving four minutes for roughing. rang the changes with Lightning's lines with some unfamiliar combinations.

Lightning shut out by Wildcats

League - Lightning 0, Swindon Wildcats 3, Sunday March 9, 2014

Lightning were shut out at home for the first time this season when Swindon Wildcats emerged as 3-0 victors at Coventry Skydome.
The hosts ran out of ideas in how to overcome a two goal deficit at the end of the first period - a gap that grew to three by the mid point of the game.
Lightning have had very few training sessions since the turn of the year because of midweek games and it seemed the lack of them was exposed by Wildcats.
Too often players were trying to take the puck almost the whole length of the ice - only to be dispossessed. And when they did try to pass there was a lack of understanding with team mates.
Swindon grabbed the lead after 3mins 47secs when Aaron Nell crashed the puck in past goalie Stephen Wall from Jonas Hoog's set up.
Ross Green and Stan Lascek both had chances to get Lightning back on terms before Wall was called into to action to stop a Henri Sandvik effort.
Lightning survived an eighth minute penalty on Michael Farn but could not get enough pressure on goal when Sam Godfrey's spell in the sin bin for holding Lascek gave them the extra man.
When Janne Jokila was rightly penalised for holding Jan Kostal the visitors were able to add to their tally at 19mins 2secs with a powerplay strike from Nell - again Hoog was the provider.
Even though Lightning outshot Wildcats 15-5 in the first period there was not enough quality to beat goalie Steve Lyle.
Nick Poole's charges started the second session brightly with Adam Carr and Lascek going close.
But that was all negated with a goal that many could see coming - Nell firing in on Wall only to have his effort blocked before Hoog was in position to sweep up the left overs at 28mins 35secs.
Lightning immediately called a time out to steady the ship.
Although it did end Swindon's scoring it didn't do much to turn the game around.
Within a minute Tom Carlon and Ryan Watt clashed with both receiving four minutes for roughing and two minutes for delaying the game.
Sandvik was called for interference and the best Lightning could manage on the powerplay was a Lukas Zatopek shot from the blue line.
The third session saw Lightning - as in the first two sessions - again outshoot Swindon but it brought no reward. Man of the match, Green, took, the puck all the way from defence to goal but unfortunately his finish was not good enough to beat a goalie of Lyle's experience.
Zatopek had a blast from the left and Blaz Emersic an effort from closer range - but this was a night when Lightning could have played till midnight and not scored.
